11year old Achuo Joy loved literacy class but she was easily distracted on the way home after class, often arriving home late. Finally, her mother forbade her from attending classes. Achuo Joy was so disappointed; learning to read and write Aghem had been so important to her. She pleaded with her mother, saying “Mama, our grandfather always warned us never to talk to him in English, or speak English in this house. Now I have this opportunity to study the mother tongue so that I can discuss with grandfather.”
Achuo Joy’s eagerness convinced her mother to relent. To ensure the girl was not late again, though, her mother began accompanying her to classes. There, she discovered her own delight in reading and writing Aghem. She is a reader in the local church, and now enjoys reading Scripture in her mother tongue. Mother and daughter are both eager to continue learning.
