Children who enter school with no knowledge of the national language are at a real disadvantage. They struggle to understand even the simplest directions given by the teacher. These children will likely drop out or be forced to repeat grades. How much better when children learn in their own language first and then study the national language as a subject before using the national language for learning new concepts. In one project school in Nepal, the results on standardized tests have been outstanding and other language communities are taking note.
